Required Text:

Jordan-Bychkov and Domosh, The Human Mosaic: A Thematic Introduction to Cultural Geography, ninth edition, 2003.

Examinations:

There will be two midterms and a final examination.  Tests are based on material presented in lectures and assigned readings from the text.  Each examination consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. The final is not comprehensive; it will cover only the material covered in the last third of the semester.

Term Paper Assignment:

An 8- to 10-page term paper, including photographs, is a required component of the course.  The paper is to be organized and written as a community walking tour.  It is worth a maximum of 100 points.  The assignment is described in detail on a separate page.  The paper is due on Thursday, May 1.

Grading:

A total of 400 points is attainable in the course.  The final point scores, relative to the rest of the class, will be used to determine a letter grade distribution; grades will be based on a "curve."  No extra credit is available.

Attendance and Make-up Examination Policies:

Attendance is strongly urged for all lectures, although attendance will neither be taken nor will apply toward a letter grade for the course.  Attendance is required for the examinations.  Make up examinations are given only with the explicit permission of the professor, who must be notified prior to the scheduled exam or immediately thereafter in the case of a documented emergency.  Make up examinations will be scheduled as soon as possible after the missed exam.
