Description: Topics:  Quotient Spaces, Fundamental Group, Classification of Surfaces  Prerequisites: MATH 550A
Goals: 

This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of algebraic topology and facilitate students' learning of advanced mathemamtics through writing and revising solutions to exercises in topology.

Texts (required):
Topology, Second Edition, James Munkres, Prentice Hall 2000

Assignments:
Expect weekly homework, consisting of reading, writing and exercises.
Homework:  The homework assignments will be graded subject to the following rules:
  • Problems within an assignment will be graded indepedently, as marked in the assingment.  (If you only did part of it on time, turn in that part.)
  • A problem completed correctly and on time will receive 100% of the points.
  • A problem completed correctly and up to one week late will receive 80% of the points. (I really want you to do the homework!!)
  • An incorrect problem (one which is either mathematically wrong or written poorly) will receive partial credit and may be corrected and resubmitted within a week from when it is returned for up to 80% of the points. (In fact, I really want you to do the homework correctly!! Even if you need help or more time.)
