About the Long Beach
Area Peace Network (LBAPN)
“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired
signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not
fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not
spending money alone; it is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius
of its scientists, the hopes of its children.”
--- President Dwight D. Eisenhower
The Long Beach Area Peace Network (LBAPN, pronounced “l’boppin”)
is heir to a long tradition of peace and justice activism in the Long
Beach area. We re-organized in the Spring of 1999, in the wake of Clinton’s
bombing of Afghanistan and the Sudan, and in anticipation of the war in
the Balkans. We are committed to creating awareness and showing commitment
to peace at every level - “Peace in our world, our streets, our
schools, our homes, & our hearts. Violence is not the answer!”
To this end, we have organized a number of Peace Walks and demonstrations
in which we encourage walkers to express their own concerns with signs
and literature. Examples include: Fair Trade not Free Trade, No to the
WTO, Globalize Democracy and Human Rights, Free Mumia, Stop Sweatshops,
End the Embargo against Iraq and Cuba: No Nukes, Women’s Rights
Are Human Rights, Justice for Janitors, We Didn't Cross the Border: The
Border Crossed Us, Free Pacifica, Stop Hate Crimes, End Domestic Violence,
Save the Wetlands, Defend Women's Right to Choose.
Inspired by the Seattle/WTO protests and deeply concerned about the attack
on the WTC and Bush’s “War on Terrorism,” we are continuing
our efforts to bring peace, justice, ecological sanity, and the spirit
of Seattle to our neighborhoods and the diverse communities of Long Beach.
Our major activities at the present time include our weekly vigil every
Friday evening on Belmont Shore (2nd & Nieto) and our monthly Peace
Calendar (click on "Calendar" above).
We meet at irregular intervals for a potluck, some serious video-viewing
and discussion of the current state of the struggle for peace and social
justice in Long Brach and the world.
