Immigration Debate

Activism • Starting above: English major Will Jackson listens to others after speaking about his disagreement with illegal immigration. History major Richard Leahy attempts to take an American flag being used as a prop during the immigration rally because demonstrators allowed it to touch the ground. Demonstrators tell students to boycott purchasing food in the USU Food Court. Asian American studies major Sumiko Braun led a march through the University Student Union during the May Day Rally. News

  • Activism brings immigration debate
While people across the nation took to the streets in protest for the “day with out an immigrant” movement Monday, students and faculty throughout Cal State Long Beach supported the movement.

  • Survey to quicken students’ education
Scams, “free iPods” and potential viruses: these might be expected connections with surveys sent to students’ e-mails.

  • Convictions not hindering financial aid
A recent academic database search through California State University Library revealed drug convictions are causing students to be denied financial aid, raising concerns of whether this factor has discouraged students from attending college.

  • Professors rate reliability of ratemyprofessor.com
Professor rating Web sites such as RateMyProfessors.com and Cal State Long Beach’s own Beachpride.com not only have an effect on students, but professors and their teaching methods too.

  • Campus administration responds to immigration protest
Though many people participated in demonstrations on campus Monday, the activities on campus did not have a major impact on classes.

Opinion

  • Our View: Bush opposes Latino integration, U.S.
The national anthem is, for many people, more than just a song. It is a message to the world, proclaiming a nation’s virtues, evoking a sense of pride and nationalism in those who sing it. Recently, President George W. Bush and other Republican pundits decided America’s anthem should be sung only in English as singing it in Spanish would be disrespectful and unpatriotic.

  • ASI Senators actions harmful to university
Recently the Associated Student Inc. senators have taken it upon themselves to exclude our campus from the California State Student Association (CSSA). CSSA is a group that represents California State University students in matters relating to fee increases, financial aid, textbook prices and other areas relevant to maintaining the CSU mission of an affordable and accessible quality education. CSSA facilitates the advocating of student interests to administrators, community members and state and federal legislators.

  • Police misconduct interferes with student’s rights
In the mist of several police brutality cases another officer decides to take his problems out on two innocent college students, except this time he harassed the wrong guy. On April 20, the Cal State Long Beach chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), of which I am president, along with the American Marketing Association (AMA) and Westbound Communications, hosted a social event at Wasabi in downtown Long Beach.

Sports

  • Dirtbags sweep series, increase streak to seven
The Long Beach State Dirtbags swept the Pacific Tigers in three games over the weekend at Blair Field.

  • 49er women chase away Tigers
Michelle Turner has been one of the most dominating pitchers for the Long Beach State softball team, but all year, Head Coach Pete Man-arino has been searching for a suitable second pitcher to complement Turner. Manarino’s search might have ended.
