Demonstration • Long Beach Fire Fighters demonstrate how they go about rescuing trapped passengers with a device they call the burrito at the Triennial Disaster Exercise. The burrito wraps around the victim making it easier to transport and move the body (top). Volunteers at Saturday’s Triennial Disaster Exercise react to their injuries as they try to find help after the aircraft they were traveling in was hit by a refueling truck that contained hazardous materials (bottom). News

  • Academic Senate ends grading debate
The Cal State Long Beach Academic Senate chose not to institute plus/minus grading following a pointed argument and strong opposition from student leaders Thursday.

  • Wind Symphony band blows Salt Lake away
This year, the Cal State Long Beach Wind Symphony was chosen as one of two universities nationwide to perform at the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) in Salt Lake City this past weekend.

  • Sex violence survivors speak out at Puvungna
Feminist Organization Reclaiming Consciousness and Equality (F.O.R.C.E.) and the Women’s Resources Center at Cal State Long Beach organized a bonfire-speak out to encourage sexual assault victims and survivors to speak out at the Puvungna burial grounds Wednesday.

  • Women’s health summit fosters sex awareness
More than 600 people attended the first annual Long Beach Women’s Health Summit held Saturday at Cal State Long Beach. The event, Women Through the Ages, was from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the campus’ University Student Union and was free to all community members.

Opinion

  • Our View: Paper referendum the real deal, vote yes
So what is all of this referendum stuff about anyway? Didn’t we already have an election? Who said we should have another?

  • Spring breakers rebuild together over clear sky
It feels ironic in a sense. I spent the whole spring break away from my real family but still, it is my Louisiana family I miss. I feel proud to know I was a part of a group that traveled some 2,000 miles, leaving all the comforts of our homes just to give strangers back the comforts of a home.

  • Hear ye, autographs are for sale by the dozens
Do you ever miss seeing those petitioners on campus calling out to you, “Are you registered to vote?” I hate hearing that question because I already know what they are after: my lovely autograph. I don’t know about the rest of the student body, but I am quite fed up with these petitioners asking me if I’m registered to vote.

  • America has a ‘gas’ problem, commutes hurting us
Saturday marked the yearly celebration for people throughout the world to recognize their obligation to build a safer, healthier and cleaner planet. Since 1970, people have gathered to celebrate Earth Day, yet this year on the front of many Americans’ minds were probably the countless dollars they would be paying in the coming months to fuel their cars.

Diversions

  • The Subways bring fresh sound to new album
You can add English power-trio the Subways—why they aren’t called the Undergrounds remains a mystery—onto the ever growing list of rock ‘n’ roll bands warranting that distressed, vintage sound. However, the youthful group is one band to finally get it right.

  • The Bangkok Five typical rock
Upon first listen, the Bangkok Five (tB5) has a surfer feel to its music, but repeated playing of its sophomore album, “Who’s Gonna Take Us Alive,” reveals a complex mix of various genres.

  • LA’s Julie combines quirks with rock
“ Catch a Feeling,” the first self-release by Los Angeles-based band Julie, sounds a lot like most of the bands you hear on K-ROQ.

Sports

  • Double the fun for L.A. basketball followers
The Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers are both in the playoffs. The last time both Los Angeles teams were in the postseason was in 1997.

  • Aggressive attacks allow advancement to semifinals
A fierce fight to the finish in a 3-1 victory over BYU solidified a spot for Long Beach State men’s volleyball in the MPSF semifinals, which take place Thursday against rival UC Irvine. The night stretched to four games, with three games in favor of LBSU, 30-21, 30-23, 25-30, 30-25.
