The Long Beach State softball team had its season end Saturday, first losing
to tournament host UCLA, 5-0, and then losing an elimination game to San Diego
State 3-1. Long Beach beat the Aztecs 1-0 on Friday.
In what turned out to be the 49ers last game of the year, SDSU scored three unearned
runs in the sixth inning, and Christina Ross pitched a two-hitter, en route to
SDSU eliminating LBSU from the NCAA Regionals.
Michelle Turner retired the first batter in the sixth inning, but then an error
and an Erin Flores double tied the game at one.
After another out, Monica Alnes hit a double, scoring Flores. The troubled inning
was capped off when third baseman Melanie McCauley committed an error, which
allowed Alnes to score.
LBSU’s only run came in the fourth inning, when Jonae Perez hit a single
which drove in Tiffanie Wedell from second base.
The Perez single would be the
last hit for the 49ers in the game.
Earlier Saturday, Turner, who transferred from UCLA to LBSU, shut down the Bruins
for four innings, but UCLA scored five runs in the final three innings. LBSU
struggled in the batter’s box, conjuring up just two hits.
In the fifth inning, LBSU committed two errors on the same play, which put UCLA
on the scoreboard. Adrian Duran then hit a single, which drove in another run,
to put the Bruins up 2-0.
Jodie Legaspi and Lisa Dodd hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth, and Krista
Colburn hit another solo home run in the seventh.
UCLA’s Anjelica Selden shut down the 49ers. She allowed just one 49er to
reach second base and no one reached third base in the shutout. The win was Selden’s
30th of the year.
LBSU got off to a good start in the NCAA Regionals, on Friday.
Kourtney Gervasi broke up Ross’s no-hitter with a single in the sixth.
Gervasi then advanced to second on a Brianna Goad sacrifice. LBSU then caught
a break, when Wedell hit a ground ball to Chrissie Markham at shortstop, but
Markham’s throw to first was wide of the first baseman, allowing Gervasi
to score the game’s only run.
In baseball last weekend . . .
The Dirtbags beat UC Riverside in two out three games in its weekend series.
LBSU improved to 29-24 and 12-6 in the Big West. The Dirtbags will conclude its
regular season with a three game home series against rival Cal State Fullerton
next weekend.
