Dirtbags
drop two of three
By Oscar Montealegre
On-line Forty-Niner
Despite
the Dirtbags losing to the No.8-ranked Arizona
State University Sun Devils 4-2, freshman
Cesar Ramos made an impressive debut for
the Dirtbags.
Cesar
Ramos, a freshman right handed pitcher from
Pico Rivera, went 5.2 innings in relief
and gave up no runs and only three hits.
In addition, Ramos only walked one batter
and struck out four. Eventually Ramos’ arm
tired in the eighth inning and the coaches
opted to take him out of the game in spite
of his strong performance.
Cesar Ramos was a sixth round draft pick
of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Ramos retired his first 14 batters in his
college career until he gave up a double
in the seventh inning with only one out.
Cesar Ramos relieved Matt Paz, whose pitching
record this season is (0-1). Paz retired
the side in order in the first inning. However,
in the second inning Paz experienced a reversal
of fortune. Paz gave up four runs on three
hits in the inning. Only two of the four
runs were accounted to Matt Paz.
His start versus ASU was Paz’s first appearance
in over a year. Paz’s long absence was due
to the Tommy John surgery he endured after
an injury early last season. Matt Paz was
taken out of the game after 29 pitches,
19 out of the 29 pitches he threw were strikes.
He also recorded strikeouts on three of
the four outs he tallied for the Dirtbags.
In the second inning Arizona State sent
10 men to the plate. They scored four runs
in the second, two of which came off of
a single from ASU’s Dennis Wyriak.
The Dirtbags were able to cut the lead in
half at 4-2. Travis Udvarhelyi’s two-out,
two-run double also broke a 16-inning scoreless
streak for the 49ers.
Carlos Muniz then came on to relieve Ramos
in the eighth. Muniz pitched a scoreless
ninth inning to keep the Dirtbags’s deficit
to two runs. But the 49ers were unable to
tie the score in the ninth inning.
The 49ers return to action next versus University
of Southern California in a three-game series.
Friday’s and Sunday’s games are at USC,
while Saturday’s game is at Blair Field.
