The
track and field team had plenty to be happy
about after its first indoor meet of the
season at the Utah State Motor Invitational
last Saturday. Michael Dickran, Holly Lipscomb
and Megan Irey placed first in their events
as Shingo Suzumura and Serena Boykin broke
school records.
Dickran and Suzumura, junior transfers,
made an immediate impact on The Beach’s
track and field team. Dickran placed first
in the 800-meter with a time of 1 minute,
58.94 seconds. Suzumura broke the school
record in the 60-meter high hurdles with
a time of 8.14 seconds, but had to settle
for second place. The junior’s altitude
adjusted time of 8.19 seconds erased Kenny
Vinh’s 2001 school-record of 8.33 seconds.
In the men’s weight event Cory Loebl, team
captain, placed third with a throw of 53-feet
4.25-inches. Loebl also participated in
the shot put event where he placed second
with a 51-foot 6.50-inch throw.
On the women’s side, Serena Boykin didn’t
surprise many when she broke her old school-record
in the Shot Put event with a throw of 49-feet
10-inches. The six foot junior broke her
previous record by almost four feet and
placed second in the event.
Lipscomb and Irey also performed well for
the Beach. Lipscomb placed first in the
long jump recording an amazing 18-feet 5.25
inch jump. Not to be outdone was Irey in
the triple jump event, posting a 37-foot
9.50-inch jump to blow away the competition.
Irey also placed fourth in the 60-meter
dash with a time of 7.90 seconds.
Stephanie Sampson also had a remarkable
outing, tossing the second farthest weight
throw in LBSU history. Sampson recorded
a 53-foot 3.50-inch throw that locked in
her at second place.
Other top performers included Terrance Wroblewski
who finished second in the 3,000-meter,
and Adrian Ruark who placed third in the
pole vault competition.
Up next for the selected athletes by Head
Coach Andy Sythe is the Northern Arizona
Invite in Flagstaff, Arizona on Saturday,
Feb.8. Sythe said last week that he is only
going to take the athletes that he feels
are ready to compete at a high level.
