Grad school offers more opportunities

Nowadays, achieving an undergraduate degree may not be enough to obtain a well paying job. With the existing difficulties in getting a job, graduate schools are gaining more appeal from students.

Nevertheless, some students have no option but to go to graduate school. Students seeking to become engineers must pursue a post-graduate education, and psychology majors have to receive a graduate degree in order to practice their acquired craft.

“Pursuing a graduate degree may be required depending on your profession,” said Carol Brown-Elston, counselor at the Career Development Center. “For instance, if you are studying physically therapy or business, then a graduate degree will definitely be needed. Basically, some students just do not have an option and are forced to get a graduate degree in order to compete in their aspired career.”

The benefit of attending graduate school is that it can create more options in the work field. Also, it strengthens a personal resume immediately and can give students more potential in getting a high-paying job or a job that a student has always desired.

“Students planning on going to grad school will find it extremely useful to talk to employers at the Job Fair,” Ed Morton, director of Career Development Center said. It is important to know what employers are seeking in new employees.

Prior to attending graduate school it is recommended to do research in selecting the desired graduate school, to be positive about committing time and dedication to graduate school.

“I would not recommend going to grad school just because you are not ready to enter the workforce.” Brown-Elston said. “[Students] should do a lot of research and figure out what exactly you want to do and then decide if graduate school will benefit your career,”   The career center offers workshops each semester that focus on preparation for graduate school.

“I plan to go to graduate school because I feel it will open more doors for me in the workforce,” CSULB student, Sindey Guerrero said. “Also, it gives me the opportunity to continue studying what I enjoy and it will better prepare me once I enter the real world. And hopefully a master’s degree will benefit me by raising my yearly income.”
