The
President’s Commission on the Status of
Women at Cal State Long Beach is seeking
nominations for its first-ever Advancement
of Women Awards.
The commission will honor a student, a faculty
member and a staff member or administrator
who actively contributes to the advancement
of women on campus through their scholarship,
teaching, organizational work, campus community
service or any other form of support for
CSULB women. All members of the campus community
are eligible to be nominated.
“This will be the first time in the commission’s
existence that this type of award will be
given,” said Elizabeth Novack, University
Ombuds and PCSW awards committee co-chair.
“We want this award to be successful and
hope to have the event annually.”
This award is designed to acknowledge publicly
and reward significant contributions to
the individuals who helped to advance women
at CSULB.
“It’s good to know about this award as a
woman and I hope that this event will bring
better educational, working and social environment
for women at CSULB,” Kyongran Chan, senior
art major said.
Novack explained that the commission simply
wants to present extra appreciation for
these individuals and make sure that students
know about all services, which CSULB provides
not only for women but also for all students
on campus.
“The PCSW award will publicly recognize
women and men who worked to advance women
on campus, but it will also help people
understand how many ways there are to help
improve circumstances for women here,” said
Toni Beron, assistant vice president of
public affairs and PCSW awards committee
co-chair.
Each of the winners will receive a plaque
presented by President Maxson, a $250 gift
certificate for the University Bookstore
and will be honored on a perpetual plaque
to be displayed on campus. Recipients also
will be recognized at the spring Women’s
Research Colloquium on April 28.
Nominations must include an extensive letter
detailing the work that the candidate has
done for women at the university and why
it is significant by Mar. 14. Those nominating
must include the names and contact information
of two others who can attest to the nominee’s
qualifications for the award.
The President’s Commission on the Status
of Women was established on campus about
15 years ago to serve as an advisor on policies
and practices that affect women opportunities,
participation, and advancement of women
at CSULB.
“As a commission, we’ve worked very hard
to help all women at Long Beach State, and
we know that there are a lot of individuals
on campus who also try to help women here,”
Beron said.
The commission expects many people will
be nominated and hopes that this first award
will raise people’s awareness that the advancement
of women is an important issue on campus.
