Alvarez aces another

By Dwight Flenniken
On-line Forty-Niner

Long Beach State's Abe Alvarez picked up his sixth win without a loss this season in a 3-1 victory over Wichita State in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Blair Field.

Alvarez, a sophomore, threw five scoreless innings and struck out six batters on 87 pitches.

"He's got a bunch of starts in a row on five days rest," LBSU assistant coach Troy Buckley said. "It's nice that it got set up that way."

Alvarez gave up two singles on the night, helping LBSU (14-6) extend its winning streak to seven games.

The Dirtbags started the game with a single by Jeremy Reed. Todd Jennings followed with a two-out double to left field that scored Reed and gave LBSU a 1-0 lead.

LBSU widened its lead in the fourth with two runs on five hits. Jennings led off with a single, and Chris Wright and Brad Davis added consecutive bunt singles to load the bases.

Following a Mike Hofius strikeout, Paul McAnulty drove Jennings home with a shot to centerfield off Shocker reliever Trent Henderson. Nick Orlandos added the final RBI with a single that scored Chris Wright.

"We've been emphasizing that," Dirtbag head coach Mike Weathers said about the back-to-back bunt singles. "It's something we need to try to do."

Wichita State (10-3) came alive after LBSU reliever Neil Jamison gave up a leadoff double in the seventh inning. A walk to pinch hitter Bryan Erstad, and an error by catcher Brad Davis on an attempted pickoff at second base moved runners into scoring position, but a run-scoring fly ball from Dustin Hawkins was all Wichita State could muster.

"I thought Neil Jamison did a great job in that inning," Weathers said.

Carlos Muniz and Josh Alliston combined for one-hit relief to close out the victory for the Dirtbags, with Alliston picking up his third save of the year.

Wichita State is currently ranked sixth and LBSU 17th in this week's Baseball America poll. The Dirtbags will play Big West rival Cal State Fullerton in a nonconference road series beginning Friday.
