Beach hoops rebound after rough start

Staff reports

Whose the hottest team at Long Beach State? As of press time, the answer had to be the women's basketball squad.

The Beach, which lost its first six contests, rattled off eight wins in its next 10 games to even its record at 8-8, including a 4-2 mark in the Big West Conference.

The 49ers went into the winter break with an 0-4 record, then lost its next two games -- at Indiana, 88-56, Dec. 16 and at Northwestern, 54-39, Dec. 18 -- to fall to a season-worst 0-6.

The tide turned for The Beach soon after. The 49ers recorded their first victory of the season Dec. 21 by beating homestanding University of San Francisco, 85-77, then returned home to host The Beach Classic. The 49ers routed St. Francis (NY), 106-58, Dec. 27 to advance to the championship game, where they defeated Fairfield, 83-77, the following night to claim the title.

The Beach blew out visiting Centenary, 95-55, Dec. 30 to enter Big West play with a 4-6, but the 49ers dropped an 89-78 decision Jan. 3 to host UC Riverside -- a team playing its first Big West Conference game ever -- in their conference opener.

While a loss to a school playing its first season in Division I could have been devastating, the Beach responded to win its next four games to improve its conference record to 4-1 -- a 91-60 win Jan. 5 at Cal State Fullerton, home victories over UC Irvine (91-60) Jan. 10 and Idaho (68-57) Jan 13, and an 83-62 triumph over Cal State Northridge Jan. 18.

Despite a 72-69 loss to Pacific Jan. 20, the 49ers stood in fourth place in the Big West standings as of last Wednesday. Ekuah Ramsey leads LBSU in scoring with a 14.3 point per game average and Crystal Givens is second at 12.9 ppg. Glory Johnson, who was named Big West Player of the Week for the last week of December,  is averaging 10.3 ppg.
