Car show helps cure cancer

By Erin Kemp
Special to the On-line Forty-Niner

Cal State Long Beach is gearing up to host a car show Sunday with proceeds benefiting cancer research and treatment.

The Concours d'Elegance et Vitesse, Celebration of Speed and Splendor, will showcase about 200 classic and vintage racing cars April 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of The Pyramid.

Although this is the event's first year, Co-chairman Alan Henderson said he plans to make it an annual event. With a passion for treating cancer and a love for cars, Henderson put together Speed and Splendor with CSULB professor Michael Lacourse, serving as executive director, and Co-chairman Bata Mataja.

Henderson, a professor of health and science at CSULB, has been a longtime participant of the Long Beach Grand Prix and plans to co-chair Speed and Splendor following the Grand Prix each year.

A member of the American Cancer Society, Henderson said cars, cancer and public health are his passions. Henderson served as president of the Long Beach unit of the American Cancer Society for several years and is dedicated to the fight against cancer.

Also an avid member of Long Beach Cares, Henderson said he believes in a healthy community, enjoys supporting the public heath cause and said he believes the Celebration of Speed and Splendor will be highly beneficial.

In addition to the car show, Speed and Splendor will conduct a private auction where participants will bid on donated items like a shirt worn by drag racer John Force. So far, private parties have donated more than $40,000 in support of the event.

There will also be food and live music, including Jennifer York from KTLA.

Winners of specific categories like "elegance" will take home an Indy Brick.  The two overall winners of Speed and Splendor will receive miniature versions of the Bad Company trophy, a bronzed sculpture of The Pyramid. Each car owner will receive a goodie-bag with car-care products.

The event is expected to be a huge success, with organizers hoping to draw around 10,000 people, Henderson said. Students can purchase discount tickets in advance for $8 and $20 at the door. Children under 12 are free with an adult purchase.

For ticket information, call (562) 985-4949 or visit The Pyramid Box Office. For more information, call (562) 2886 or visit speedandsplendor.com.
Proceeds benefit CSULB's departments of radiation therapy and kinesiology, the American Cancer Society and Long Beach Cares.
