Dorm décor
from ceiling to floor makes a place home
By Alisha Gomez

With college life
comes dorm living, tiny apartments, scrimping and saving,
often leaving most students with barely any decorating. But
there are ways to create that perfect place inexpensively,
making it "home."
A perfect store to shop at is IKEA because the furniture is
cool, functional, inexpensive and easy to put together. Some
key pieces students can find there are couches that are hip
in design, but light on the wallet. Desks are
also sold at a reasonable price. There are always sales on
silverware, glasses and all sorts of things that you know
you need, but are not about to waste your savings on.
If the carpet in your dorm or apartment sucks, try using a
rug to give the place flare. Both Target and IKEA have vibrant
throw rugs that tend to be cheap and vary enough to suit your
own style needs. A rug instantly gives a place color and life.
Another way to spice up a room is to add color to white walls.
Pick a wall that is prominent and clear of any obstructions
(like a fireplace or door). Then choose a really deep blue,
purple, red, orange; whatever your preference and paint that
entire piece. The dimensions of the room will change dramatically,
giving the place a more intimate and personal feel.
If space is an issue and there are not enough closets, then
try storing things on chrome wire racks, organizing your books
or CDs in different angles. The important thing about shelves
to remember is that the more you have, the less cramped the
floor space will be.
Lighting is very important for creating a specific atmosphere.
Paper-covered lights soften a room's look. Hanging lights
create a unique look for the room. Many places like Urban
Outfitter's and IKEA have an assortment of different colors
and shapes in paper lamps.
Thrift stores are a gold mine waiting to be discovered.
Some of the best art and decorating items can be found at
these places. Thrift stores are great if you have the time
and energy to fix old things and make them brand new.
For all of you in touch with your "Chi", Feng Shui
principles may be useful when deciding where your bed will
go or your coffee table. Feng Shui teaches how to create a
balance and harmony around you. Check on the Internet for
sites on how to organize your room.
By organizing your place to suit your personality, you will
feel more positive and in touch with your inner living style.
