The
Long Beach State women’s volleyball team
saw its season come to a screeching halt
on Thursday after the UCLA Bruins defeated
the 49ers in the first round of the 2002
NCAA Tournament in Malibu.
UCLA defeated LBSU in three straight games,
30-25. 30-27, 30-21, to improve to 20-13
on the season and advance to the second
round.
The Beach ended the season with a 28-4 record.
According to the NCAA Web site, head coach
Brian Gimmillaro said, “UCLA out-played
us in every area of the game. They out-hit
us, out-dug us and out-blocked us. I can’t
remember the last time a team did that to
us.’”
In fact, the last time The Beach fell to
an opponent in the first round of the NCAA
Tournament was in 1987.
The Bruins hit .282 for the match, while
the UCLA defense limited the 49ers to .167
with an 11-6 edge in team blocks. UCLA also
out-dug LBSU, 42-39.
Senior Elisha Thomas led the 49ers with
a match-high 15 kills while Lindsay Phillips
added 10 kills. Brittany Hochevar contributed
with 38 assists.
Sophomore Heather Cullen led the Bruins
with a team-high 10 kills while Lauren Fendrick,
Brynn Murphy and Cira Wright chipped in
with 9 kills each.
“I thought we played a solid all-around
match,” UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski
said according to the NCAA Web site. “We
served the ball well and passed the ball
well and those are two ingredients to running
a productive offense.”
