Blowing
the competition out of the water on Saturday,
the Long Beach State men’s water polo team
defeated UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz
at the 49er Campus Pool.
The 49ers have hit the .500 mark in the
standings, with an overall record of 13-13,
after topping UCSD, 11-7, and UCSC, 10-7,
in a pair of non-league victories.
In the contest against UCSC, eight different
49ers scored to display a wel-balanced offensive
attack.
Sophomore Eric Geoffroy and junior David
Del Grande led The Beach, scoring two goals
each.
The 49ers offense ran at full throttle early
and led 8-3 at the half. In the second half,
the LBSU reserves participated in the action
as The Beach cruised to a 10-7 victory.
Sophomore Michael Konstas recorded five
saves for the 49ers, while Mike Webb tallied
three goals for UCSC.
In the opening game, freshman goalie Thomas
Onyshko hit a personal milestone, recording
a career-high 14 saves and anchoring the
defense to lead LBSU to a 11-7 win over
UCSD.
Geoffroy also contributed three goals for
the 49ers.
Leading 5-3 at the half, the 49ers surged
ahead in the third quarter and outscored
the Tritons 4-0, propelling the 49ers to
an insurmountable 9-3 lead.
UCSD closed the game in the fourth, outscoring
the 49ers 4-2, but the six-goal lead was
too much for the Tritons to beat. Team Captain
senior Aaron Holloway and junior Nathan
Allard added two goals for the 49ers.
Head Coach Rick Azevedo said he is pleased
with how both Konstas and Onyshko are performing.
“We have two great quality goalies,” Azevedo
said. “Our defense was strong and they were
really good with knocking the shots down.”
