Carlson’s
hat trick lifts The Beach

The
spirit and strength were certainly evident
within the 49ers as Long Beach State men’s
water polo team defeated the UC Santa Barbara
Gauchos on the road, 6-5, on Sunday.
This win improves the No. 9-ranked LBSU
to 11-3 overall and 1-5 in Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation competition, while UCSB
dropped to 6-13 and 0-5 in MPSF play.
Senior
Kellyn Carlson was the main scorer of the
game racking up three goals for the 49ers,
and broke both ties throughout the game
with his timely offensive shots.
Also, team captain Aaron Holloway and juniors
Pat Logan and David Del Grande each scored
one goal.
During the second quarter, Gauchos’ Anthony
Borasi scored three of the first four goals,
propelling UCSB to a 4-0 lead.
However, the 49ers ignited a rally of their
own and sliced into the lead, closing out
the half with three consecutive goals.
Goalkeeper Thomas Onyshko replaced starter
Michael Konstas in the second half and shut
out UCSB’s offense in the third quarter,
allowing the 49ers ample time to tie the
game at 4-4.
In the last quarter of the game, the score
was tied 4-4 until senior Kellyn Carlson
put the 49ers ahead with his second goal
of the game.
But UCSB maintained their focus and resilience
and evened the game once more as Dough Arthur,
who tallied a pair of goals, found the back
of the net for the Gauchos, making it a
5-5 contest.
However, only 30 seconds later, Carlson
fired in the game-winning goal against the
Gauchos defense, securing the 6-5 win LBSU.
The Beach returns to action as the 49ers
host both UC San Diego on Saturday at 1
p.m. and UC Santa Cruz at 3 p.m. at the
49er Campus Pool.
