The
Long Beach State men’s water polo team fell
a few goals shy of the non-league victory,
losing, 9-7, to UC Santa Barbara on Sunday
at the campus pool.
Early
in the game, sophomore Erik Geoffroy scored
at 6:39 in the first and junior David Del
Grande fired one in at the 5:39 mark, giving
the 49ers (9-10) a quick 2-0 lead
During the next two and a half quarters
of action, the Gauchos (5-9) staged a strong
offensive surge.
Steven Traverso ignited the rally, scoring
UCSB’s first goal 5:07 in the first quarter
With the score tied at 3-3 in the second
quarter, UCSB then scored five of the next
six goals in the game, giving the team an
8-4 advantage.
However, the 49ers eventually narrowed the
lead to 8-7. Geoffroy scored his third goal
of the game at the 4:37 mark in the fourth
quarter, but the 49ers did score the remainder
of the game.
Goalie Michael Konstas recorded six goalie
saves in the game.
In addition, the 49ers attempted 26 shots
in the game, but many were off target, sailing
wide or hitting the crossbar.
The Gauchos attempted 18 shots and scored
on nine of those.
Also, senior Aaron Holloway added two and
Del Grande and junior Nathan Allard added
one goal each.
The 49ers go on the road next weekend to
Northern California when they play at UC
Santa Cruz on Friday, Stanford University
on Sunday and the University of the Pacific
on Sunday.
