College Holiday Guide

Christmas music began playing on local radio stations more than a month ago. As soon as cob webs and jack-o-lanterns fell from store walls, garland and lights quickly replaced them. But Cal State Long Beach students were not ready for the holiday festivities quite as early as the rest of the world.

When students returned from Thanksgiving vacation, many were ready for the semester to be over. However, late hours in the library needed to be filled, the last batch of coffee still to be made, and Scantrons and blue books still needed to be used.

But once all these university responsibilities have been completed, students can then look forward to the mug of hot chocolate by the fire, the sight of beautiful packages under the tree, the smell of fresh baked Christmas cookies, the feeling of cozy hats and gloves and the warm smile that appears with the big inflatable snowman on the local corner.

College students are good with improvising. When it comes to weak bank accounts and too many people to buy gifts for, students must get creative. This year’s Holiday Guide gives options on surviving the rough but enjoyable holiday season.

The locale of festivities remains in Long Beach, to find new and different ways to catch the sights and sounds of the wintry wonderland.

The consumer portion gives tips for saving money, complete with gift ideas for loved ones.

The final pages of this guide takes a look at the ways other cultures celebrate the holidays. Take notes, tape parts to the fridge, but remember to forget about textbooks for a few weeks and enjoy.
