Cal State Long
Beach Foundation employees and senior citizens may be eligible
for tuition waivers.
CSULB Foundation
policy provides educational assistance to eligible Foundation
employees, allowing them to receive a maximum reimbursement
of tuition fees equivalent to six units of instruction or
less at the prevailing undergraduate rate at CSULB, Noelle
Longmeyer, foundation human resources administrator, said.
The Foundation
will consider requests for educational assistance for all
semesters year round, Longmeyer said.
"Course work
may be completed at any institution of higher learning or
technical education so long as the courses are directly related
to the employee's position, and/or in pursuit of a degree
relevant to the employee's position," Longmeyer
said. "Course work completed in pursuit of a second bachelor's
or master's degree will not be considered for reimbursement."
Requests for educational
assistance are subject to the availability of project and
contract funds and/or program sponsor approval, according
to Longmeyer.
Employees requesting
educational assistance must complete and submit a request
for assistance in advance. The form must be approved
by the principal investigator and the Foundation human resources
for consideration.
In addition to
the form, the requesting employee is required to submit a
copy of the receipt for tuition fees paid and a grade report
of a C or better in the completed course.
Employees will
not be eligible for reimbursement if their CSULB Foundation
employment ends prior to completion of the coursework for
which reimbursement is requested.
Currently, six
percent of the approximately 213 eligible employees have participated
in the educational assistance program, Longmeyer said.
Another program,
the Senior Citizen Education Program, enables California residents
over 60 years of age to enroll as regular students at a cost
of $3 per semester, Leah Nieto, assistant director for academic
support, said.
The fees include
a dollar each for the facilities, Associated Students Inc.,
and instructionally related activities for the spring and
fall semesters. The fee is $2 during the summer session when
the instructionally related activities fee is waived.
The program has
been in operation since 1976 under Title 5 of the Education
Code.
Most participants
thus far have not sought a degree, Nieto said. If individuals
are seeking a degree, they must meet test scores and regular
admission standards.
Participation in
the program has increased over the years, she said. Approximately
150 individuals enrolled in the program in the fall 2000 semester.
