New senator brings brains, experience

By Sé J. Reed
On-line Forty-Niner

Ria Superville may be one of the Associated Student Inc.'s newest senators, but she is no stranger to A.S.I.

Superville was appointed to the senate seat for the College of Natural Sciences this semester after the position remained vacant for most of the fall semester.

Having been the assistant to the four executive officers since January 2000 and the temporary A.S.I. office manager since October, it only occurred to her in December that as a student in the college, she could fill the open position.

Her experience in the offices had exposed her to the workings of A.S.I. and prepared her sufficiently for the position.

"Just being in the office I learned a lot about the government," Superville said.

Superville, who had been president of the Natural Science and Math College Council for most of fall, stepped down in December to take the senator's seat.

As a senior microbiology major, Superville is entrenched in the requisite science classes, which is one of the reasons she feels qualified to represent the College of Natural Sciences.

"Of course it's challenging sometimes," Superville said of her major. "You can get into so many different aspects in bio ... all the different 'ologies.'"

She understands the intense aspect of majoring in microbiology and acknowledges that it is not an easy choice, given the strong background the major requires in all fields of science, such as chemistry.

"Chemistry is a steppingstone for me," she said. "If you want more of a challenge, it's an interesting field."

Superville plans to head to Washington D.C. after she graduates, but despite her student government experience, she does not want to go as a politician. Her focus is forensics.

"It's pretty difficult to get into the FBI, but I plan to get there," Superville said. "I think I may start with the LAPD crime lab."

After conquering the FBI, Superville plans to head back to school.

"I want to go to med school for pathology," she said. "Hopefully at UCLA."

However, while she is at Cal State Long Beach, she is focusing on representing her constituents.

She has been actively involved in organizing a spring faculty-student mixer for her college and is already arranging for the annual Nobel Laureate speaker for next year.

Although she was appointed to her position this semester, Superville said she wants to continue her involvement and plans to formally run for her position in April's A.S.I. elections.
