The entire Cal
State Long Beach student body was awarded the Long Beach Century
Club's John Queen award, Associated Students Inc. President
Robert Garcia announced at the senate meeting.
The award, which
recognizes outstanding financial and other contributions to
the city of Long Beach's athletic programs, honored the successful
passing of the Beach Pride Referendum in spring 2000. Garcia
accepted the award on behalf of the student body at a ceremony
Feb. 13. In attendance were numerous prestigious CSULB athletics
alumni, including Jim Fassel, the current coach for the New
York Giants.
"This is the
first time it was ever awarded to, not a person, but to a
group," Garcia said.
The grand opening
of the Beach Pride Center in the University Student Union
will be held Mar. 7 from 12 to 5 p.m., Garcia said.
As part of the
opening and to kick off Beach Patrol, a new program that will
allocate points to students based on their attendance at CSULB
events, the first 300 students to register will receive a
free Beach Patrol T-shirt.
Due to concerns
raised at last week's meeting, the filing deadline to run
for a 2001-2002 A.S.I. elected office has been extended. All
candidates' election packets are due by 5 p.m. Feb 23. Due
to the extension, the election dates have also been postponed.
Elections will now be held Monday, April 2 through Wednesday,
April 4.
Also, an undisclosed
performing artist has been selected for this spring's concert
at The Pyramid, pending administrative approval. Providing
a safe concert environment for CSULB students is the primary
concern for A.S.I. administrator Chance Decker.
"We will bring
nothing to the campus that's not safe," Decker said.
Tentative dates
are Mar. 22, April 5 and April 19. The selected date will
depend primarily on the artist's availability, but A.S.I.
officials are shooting for April 5, in order to tie in the
concert with A.S.I. elections and provide students with incentive
to vote. Potential tie-ins include $2 to $3 ticket discounts
for students with A.S.I. voting stubs.
