Known for her research
in alcohol and tobacco advertising, Jean Kilbourne will present
"Deadly Persuasions: Advertising and Addiction"
today at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center.
Kilbourne, seen
on popular radio and television programs such as "The
Today Show" and "The Oprah Winfrey Show," was
named by New York Times Magazine as one of the three most
popular speakers on college campuses.
"She has an
important message to everyone about image, and how we see
ourselves, both men and women," said Lynne Coenen, assistant
director of the Women's Resource Center, which is helping
to sponsor the event. "Students who have seen her say
she's a really good speaker."
Famous for her
award-winning films based on her lectures "Slim Hopes"
and "Pack of Lies," Kilbourne has also researched
the image of women in advertising.
Kilbourne's lectures
focus on the selling of products as well as the selling of
values. Advertising sells images, it also sells concepts of
love and sexuality, of romance, of success and, perhaps above
all, of normalcy, Kilbourne said.
The lecture begins
at 5:30 p.m. in the PAC and is free to students.
