By Danielle Grossman
On-line Forty-Niner

The Long Beach State women's basketball team battled with visiting Syracuse into overtime Saturday at The Pyramid, but the 49ers ultimately lost, 76-70, in the season opener for both squads.

Jinga Gosschalk, who was starting in his first game with LBSU, led the 49ers with 20 points, sinking five of eight shots from the three-point line.

"Nothing feels good if you don't win," said Gosschalk, a junior guard from Amsterdam. "It doesn't feel good any more."

All five Beach starters scored in double figures. Senior Crystal Givens registered a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, while Tamara Inoue added 11 points, nine assists and five steals. Ekuah Ramsey had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists and freshman center Jayme Connors added 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in her first college game.

Syracuse was led by Julie McBride with  21 points and Shannon Perry with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Orangewomen dominated the 49ers on the free-throw line, making 25 of 33 shots while LBSU made eight of 13.

"They shot 20 more free throws than we did," 49er Head Coach Dallas Bolla said. "They made 25 shots, and we weren't even up there that many times."

The 49ers started the first half strong and built a 15-6 lead.  Syracuse's Jazmine Wright tied the game at 25-25 with with a layup and another layup by McBride put Syracuse ahead for the first time in the half at 30-28.

The teams swapped the lead in the second half until Perry made a free throw with 30.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 62-62 and push it to overtime.

Two jumpshots by Connors put the 49ers ahead, 66-62, in overtime, but McBride was able to hit four free throws and once again tie the score.  Ramsey pulled the 49ers ahead for the last time with a layup, but Syracuse answered with three-pointers from Jaime James and McBride to go ahead for good.
