board position

Cal State Long
Beach physics professor Simon George is running for one of
two positions on the state retirement board, the California
Public Employees Retirement System, or Cal PERS. The deadline
for state employees to vote for the 13-member board is Nov.
30. George is one of 19 candidates on the ballot.
Cal PERS is a statewide organization that decides where to
invest retirement benefits. George, who needed 250 signatures
to back his candidacy, is pushing for improved health care
benefits, financially sound investment, long-term care programs
and home loan programs.
While 1.2 million Californians work for the state as police
officers, fire fighters, school district employees and city
and state government personnel, only about 15 percent of them
usually vote for the representatives that govern their nest
egg.
George has experience working in the Academic Senate, and
as the political action chair of the California Faculty Association.
CSULB professor Marty Fiebert has worked with George.
"I already voted for him," Fiebert said. "Simon
has been in the CSU a long time. He knows the issues, knows
how to get along with other leaders and can find solutions.
He'll be able to work out differences in the board."
Board members are unpaid except for expenses, and must meet
in Sacramento each month to work on investing employee's retirement
income.
All Cal PERS employees, including faculty members, should
have already received ballots, but replacements may be obtained
by calling 1-800-794-2297.
Ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 30. They will be counted
Dec. 3 to 7.
