WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23RD 2008 Hello everyone!
FYI,
this Friday is a FREE DAY so no meeting or events. This will be b/c we
are meeting tomorrow at Rich's House for our "Beef Stick Making Party"
at 6PM in preparation for Kaleidoscope and we will be busy Saturday
working Kaleidoscope and showing off our awesome club to the CSULB
community. Although Friday is a free day, I wanted to (re)inform you
of an event that may be of interest to you. It's Davik's dinner at Hak
Heang Restaurant on Friday. If you don't know, she's the little girl
that Pu Peter (the director/producer of "Life Under Red Light" AIDS
documentary which we screened last week and President of Hearts w/o
Boundaries) helped bring over to get a new heart. She is so darn
ka-yooot! I hope you join my sister, Monica and I, and for those of you
who know my cousin Kammy, she'll be coming down from Fresno to go to
the event too. Hope to see you there! $25/student, for more info-
please read below or call/text me to let me know you would like to come
with. :) Thanks!

Wow! Four weeks left of school for CSULB! Study hard everyone!
Just a reminder that this Friday, April 25th, there will be no meeting. However,
there will be a banquet in honor of Davik Teng, the brave little girl whom the
Cambodian Community brought to the U.S. to receive a heart transplant.
Nine-year-old Davik is a truly special child in many ways.
She has traveled a long distance from her home in rural
Cambodia, from a tiny village in Svay Chrom, to have life altering
surgery in America. Davik suffers from a heart defect known
as a ventricular septal defect, or what is commonly called a hole in the heart.
Her open-heart surgery was scheduled for March 24thand was a
tremendous success. Dr.Vaughn Starnes, world-renowned
cardiac surgeon, performed the incredible procedure in only one hour with the
help of Dr. Mark Sklansky, cardiologist of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
On Friday, April 25th we will be holding a banquet at Hak Heang
Restaurant, which will serve a multi-level purpose. We will
be honoring the cardiac team for their efforts in giving Davik her new heart and
we will be raising funds to assist Davik as she returns home.
Davik and her mother, Sin Chhon, live in a compound with no electricity, no
running water and no sewage. The proceeds raised from the
banquet will be used to enhance their current living conditions.
We would be honored to have your presence at the banquet, where you can meet
Davik, her mother Sin and the two wonderful men who made this journey possible:
Chantha Bob of Sophy’s Restaurant and Peter Chhun, founder of Long
Beach-based Hearts Without Boundaries.
Admission will be a donation of $25 for students with valid identification and
$35 for the general public.

Hello awesome amazing Khmer New Year volunteers!
Thank you sOOoOooOoo much for volunteering at yesterday's Cambodian New Year
celebration at
El Dorado Park. Our face painting booth was a success and I'm very
appreciative of the volunteers who did traffic and parking. Thank you for those
who represented CSS in that capacity and taking the lead in being mentors to the
younger volunteers. Those who face painted did a great job with the crowd
control and showed tremendous artistry. Navidy's customers walked away with
beautiful flowers that look like they'd go on a pedicure :), Monica's drawings
expanded from hearts and rainbows to cows and monkeys, and the girls, Fornia,
Danni, Amy, Naleine, Momo, Kim worked really well with the little kids and drew
the cutest pictures ranging from bees to bamboos to Cambodian flags. The
artists Daniel and Ratha started doing Spiderman and special requests and I saw
Pete do an elephant on little Brittney's face. I think we got about $50 in
donations, right, Momo? Disa, I hope you get better and Alex, I hope you didn't
suffer too much from the heat. Sophy, great job doing MC on the main stage with
Hemarun! You looked and sounded beautiful. (Can someone forward this email to
her please b/c apparently, we don't have her email address on the site). Monica
and I came home and although we wanted to party in the new year, we just fell
asleep at night. If you didn't volunteer, thank you for stopping by and showing
support.
Anyway, just wanted to say MUCHO THANKS because it was HELLA HOTT yesterday and
I thought we were going to melt in the sun. However, I'm proud of CSS and we
just have Kaleidoscope and the Grad party to plan and this academic year is over
for us! Keep up your AMAZING work. I am TRULY grateful to you guys :D LOVE
YOU!

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9TH 2008
I hope everyone had a great spring break. I'm glad everyone's made it back from
their trips in one piece. Thanks for making your way up to Fresno to show mucho
support at their show and for showing them such wonderful hospitality when they
came down to join us their very first Cambodian New Year Parade. I know we're
all pretty winded but please keep it up! Since we weren't able to meet last
week, I'd like to catch you up on our many upcoming events. Brace yourself
people~ there's a lot going on. Can't wait for April to be over so we can focus
on ourselves and hanging out again! Keep up the amazing work everyone! You've
all been doing a great job. Any questions, email or call. But please READ this
email before you call b/c hopefully the answer is in there somewhere. If not,
I'd be happy to answer them. Thanks!
Today, Wednesday, April 9 @ 7PM , CSULB Lecture Hall 150
Sichan Siv, former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. (2001-6) and Deputy
Assistant to the President (1989-92) Event
He's the highest Cambodian U.S. government official. Come meet and hear about
his life story! He would love to see you there! :)
Thursday, April 10
For those in the fashion show for the parade, we may tentatively meet to plan
the fashion show for the park celebration. However, if I do not hear back from
Banteay Srey by tomorrow, we won't be doing the fashion show after all. I will
let you know by tomorrow evening. Thanks for being patient everyone.
Friday, April 11 @ 6PM, Karl Anatol Center
CSS Meeting at the Karl Anatol Center BEFORE the documentary screening.
This is where I will pass out volunteer t-shirts and parking passes for
El Dorado Park. Please be
there at 6PM so that we can meet and the documentary starts at 7PM.
"New Year Baby" documentary screening.
CSS and Chi Delta Theta are co-sponsoring this event this Friday at the Karl
Anatol Center (in the AS bldg near the Beach Hut, library, on the south side of
campus). There will be food and drinks so please come! There were also many
CSS members and alum in one part of the film and it's kind of cool to see them
in the film. This film was shown at the President's Genocide Series, but since
many weren't able to make it to that event, I was able to get the film from the
Human Dignity Program so that we can show it again on campus.
"New Year Baby" is a documentary film by Socheata Poeuv who was born on
Cambodian New Year in a refugee camp. She grew up in the U.S. not knowing about
her family's past. She journeys to
Cambodia to discover the
secrets of how her family came together during the Khmer Rouge period. She
finds that what her parents hid in shame also proves their great heroism.
Saturday, April 12 @ 8AM, El
Dorado Park Celebration
CSS is volunteering in two different capacities.
1) The 10+ awesome volunteer mentors that were at last week's volunteer meeting
and leading the high school volunteer pack. Thanks again for stepping up and
being mentors!
2) CSS has been assigned to do a face-painting booth at the park in which I NEED
12+ volunteers to do face painting. I would like to have 2 separate shifts of
at least 6 people each shift. I'd like the first shift to set up at 8:30AM and
work until 12:30PM. The 2nd shift will work from 12noon to 4:30PM and take down
at 4PM. (I'm aware the park event is from 8AM-5PM)
********* Please email me if you're interested in volunteering at the
face-painting booth and if so, which shift you prefer. If you are in the
fashion show, please sign up for the first shirt. Fashion show is in the
afternoon **********
VOLUNTEERS WILL BE GIVEN A CAM-CC T-SHIRT AND PARKING PASS ( I have all those)
BUT PLEASE ALSO BRING YOUR CSS T-SHIRT TO WEAR AND REPRESENT.
*********I would also like to set up a tent so if you have a tent, a BIG one,
please bring that, mats, chairs and such. We can use that as our campground to
rest, relax and change for the fashion show. ***********
Next Friday, April 18 @ 7PM, Beach Auditorium
"Life Under Red Light" HIV/AIDS documentary screening.
Peter Chhun, Emmy-Award winning producer and director as well as President of
Hearts Without Boundaries (awesome organization that has helped Davik Teng get a
new heart), will be screening his documentary at the Beach Auditorium. This
film was shot entirely in Cambodia
and showcases different people with
AIDS or
HIV and shares how they
became infected with the disease. Authors of the first book that documents
Cambodians in Long Beach
will also be there to take orders for their new book. Please come and bring
family members and friends!
Saturday, April 19 @ 6:30PM
UCSD "Khmer Soup for the
Soul" Cultural Show
or
UCLA "Tum Teav" Cultural
Show
CSS will be splitting up to show support to both organizations. We can talk
about carpooling this weekend! Let's spread our love <3
Sunday, April 20 @ 7PM, CSUF
Cal State Fullerton CSA
Culture Show "Reflections of our Past"
Saturday, April 26 @ CSULB
Kaleidoscope
This is a CSULB Open House event with lots of activities the day of pulling in
over 30,000 people on-campus. CSS will be selling beef sticks, rice, and fresh
coconut so we'll definitely need workers manning our booth as well as super-modos
to walk around and pull people in to purchase food from us. This is a big
fundraiser for us so be on the lookout for updates since we'll be having a BEEF
STICK MAKING PARTY SOON! :D
Friday, May 2

Former CSULB President Maxson once said, "If the only thing you do in
college is go to class, then you have not had the full college
experience." Are you looking for a club to help give you that full
college experience? Then you've come to the right place! CSS is an
organization open to people of all backgrounds dedicated to preserving
and promoting the Cambodian culture. Over the past years, CSS has put
on events such as the Rithy Phan film festival, a co-sponsorship event
of Contemporary Cambodian Issues with Cambodian Hope (C-HOPE) as well
as our annual Culture Show that has attracted over 1000 audience
members.
To find out more about CSS we recommend and invite you to our general
meetings. There you will meet CSS members and officers. It will usually
be held every Friday at
6:30 p.m. in the University Student Union Room 306
unless specified otherwise.
