Hendrick, or Tiyanoga the Great (c. 1680-1755), was a renowned sachem or chief of the Mohawk Indians, one of the six Iroquois nations inhabiting the New York area. Hendrick was also one of the four Indian leaders sent on a luxury tour of London in 1710 and presented to Queen Anne, in an effort to ensure Iroquois support of t he British. Hendrick later befriended William Johnson, who came to the Mohawk Valley in 1738 to manage his uncle's land. When Johnson requested help from the Iroquois in the French and Indian War, Hendrick volunteered. They fought together at the Battle of Lake George in 1755. Thanks to Hendrick's aid Johnson won the battle and was rewarded a baronetcy, but Hendrick himself was killed. Though Iroquois losses were severe, the victory was crucial to the British and led to teh end of France's dominion in the New World.
